Volunteer With Us

While many non-profit organizations focus on supporting children and families, our focus is on our seniors living in nursing homes and long-term care facilities within our community. We are actively looking for volunteers to help us with our Feeders for Friends program. The idea arose out of the recognition that loneliness and social isolation are two of the major factors affecting the health and wellbeing of residents of long-term care facilities. We purchase, set up, and maintain bird feeders at local nursing homes in Middlesex County so residents can enjoy the therapeutic benefit of the more than human world.

How You Can Help

  • Deliver Birdfeeders to Nursing Homes

We need volunteers to help us install and fill bird feeders at nursing homes throughout Middlesex County. Volunteers then visit each week to clean and fill the bird feeders. We provide bird feeders, shepherd's hooks, cleaning supplies, and bird food.

Bird watching is one of the simplest ways to engage with nature. By collecting and delivering bird feeders to nursing homes, you are contributing to the pleasure and well-being of residents.

  • Donate Birdfeeders & Supplies

We are always in need of bird feeders, shepherd’s hooks, bird feed, and small trash cans. Our current community drop-off location is at the home of our founder, Kathleen Lowe, at 13 Pratt St., Essex, Ct 06426.

We also accept monetary donations, which are tax-deductible, to help defray the costs of purchasing feeders, birdseed, and supplies. Contributions can be sent to Friends of the Forest, 13 Pratt St., Essex, CT 06426

  • Become a Community Partner

We are seeking community drop-off partners in Middlesex County. Potential partners should have easy access during business hours and be on a first-floor level.

We also collect donations from churches, community organizations, and local businesses. Some stores offer bird feeder recycling where anyone who brings in an old feeder gets a discount on a new one. We would be grateful for donations of recycled feeders.

Because of you, the lives of many nursing home residents will be touched.
