Obligate Faunivore
Obligate faunivore means must eat animals. In the case of songbirds, this animal protein comes in the form of insects. This is what all baby songbirds require to grow their organs, bones and feathers. Cat food, even with the addition of human-food ingredients such as egg or chicken, is not sufficient. The experience of hundreds of rehabilitators over decades show that, unless insects comprise a large percentage of the nestling diet, birds’ growth and plumage are stunted and abnormal. Their chances of making it through their first winter are very poor.
