Sacred Trees of the Celtic Wheel: Walking with Ivy — Gort

  • Virtually Via Zoom (map)

As October arrives and the trees begin loosening their leaves, Ivy becomes easier to see. Winding around an old trunk, following the stones of a wall, keeping its green as the branches above it grow bare. Something we barely noticed in summer suddenly draws our eye.

For October’s gathering in our Sacred Trees of the Celtic Wheel series, we will turn toward Ivy — Gort, exploring transformation, resilience and the connections that sustain us through change.

There is something worth spending time with here: the way Ivy finds a hold, follows the shape of what it meets and continues growing. Its path is shaped by its surroundings. We can trace those winding stems and begin thinking about our own lives, the unexpected turns, the places we have found support, the ways we have continued without knowing exactly where we were going.

As the wheel turns toward Samhain and the darker months, these questions feel close. What helps us remain connected when life changes? Where do we need support? What are we holding onto because it nourishes us, and what have we simply become accustomed to holding?

Resilience can be a quiet thing. Asking for help. Returning to a practice that steadies us. Allowing an old way of living to change. Remembering that we belong to a world of relationships, with people, animals, plants, places and those who came before us.

Throughout this evening, we will explore Ivy’s folklore, its place in Ogham and the seasonal symbolism we can draw from its ways of growing. Through guided meditation, conversation, journaling and nature practices, we will begin a relationship with Ivy that can accompany us through October.

We will explore an Ivy-walking meditation to carry into October: a slow, attentive walk to notice where Ivy grows, how its stems travel and where it finds support. There will be simple ways to adapt the practice if Ivy does not grow nearby, following the connections you can observe in your own landscape.

My hope is that you leave with something personal to return to when you see its leaves: a question, a small practice or a reminder of the connections that help you find your way.
